Pasco is the county seat of Franklin County, WA. Pasco is the smallest of the three cities that comprise the "Tri-Cities" (Kennewick, Richland and Pasco) a metropolitan market area of about 175,000 people. Located on the north bank of the Columbia River near the mouth of the Snake River, Pasco is only 383 feet above sea level even though it is near 250 miles inland. Pasco was founded in 1884 as a railroad switching yard. It still is, but the main growth of the community occurred in the 1940's when the Hanford project was started and irrigation water arrived. The largest area employers are located in the Hanford Atomic Energy Site, just north of Richland. With irrigation water available and a long growing season, (rainfall is less than 10") agriculture is the main economy. The leading crops in the Pasco area are potatoes, grapes and wheat.
