Yakima was named after the local Native Americans, the Yakamas. It is located along the Yakima River, in the eastern foothills of the Cascades Mountains. The City of Yakima was first formed four miles south of its present location as Yakima City. When the Northern Pacific railroad extended to the Yakima Valley in 1884, they were unable (so they claim) to buy up the right of way through town at a reasonable price. The railroad therefor by passed Yakima City and established North Yakima at its present location, four miles north. The railroad then offered to pay to move businesses and buildings from Yakima City to the new town site of North Yakima. More than fifty buildings and the courthouse moved! In 1918, North Yakima was renamed the City of Yakima and Yakima City was renamed Union Gap.
With over 300 days of sunshine but less than an eight inch annual rainfall, Yakima blossomed into a desert oasis at the beginning of the twentieth century when irrigation became available. Currently, Yakima County is first in the nation in the production of apples, mint, pears and hops. The Yakima Valley's 9000 acres of vineyards help make Washington the second largest producer of grapes, next to California. The City of Yakima has grown to a population of about 60,000 and Yakima County to a population of about 200,000.
The Yakima office of Zaremba Claims Services, Inc. was first opened in 1975. This office primarily serves the counties of Yakima, Kittitas and Klickitat.
